What is Renga?

Renga is a traditional Japanese poem of ‘shared writing’: where everyone can write or orally suggest a verse.

Each verse contains very short lines that alternate with 2 or 3 line “links”. They have almost teasingly invisible connections to the verses before and after.

The making of a renga poem is inclusive, creative, and encouraging: “making this communal “group poem” as important as the final result.

Award-winning Renga Poet Alan Summers, together with writer June Wentland, have already put up over 2000 verses up onto the bookshelves of Hull Central Library, and added hundreds to a number of branch libraries.

The aim of this project has many purposes:

1.) to present a sense of achievement to the City of Hull communities through events and activities, and various visits to groups by showing the richness of everyone's experiences

2.) publish two eBooks: one containing renga verses; and a companion book of "other verses"; anecdotes, and comments.  These eBooks will be available to download at the websites of With Words; Southwick Press; and Hull Libraries.

3.) two printed copies will be available: one at Hull Central Library and one at Hull History Centre.

4.) an evening reading and get together at Hull Central Library on Wednesday 1st December between 7pm and 8.30pm with refreshments and biscuits.

The project will officially conclude Thursday 2nd December, but we welcome comments and extra verses throughout this year and next year.
